Abstract
Relates to the preparation of concentrated solutions of viscose to be employed in the manufacture of artificial silk, &c., from cellulose that has been subjected to a preliminary treatment with mineral or organic acids as described in Specification 185,433. The formation of alkali cellulose takes place at a temperature of 5 DEG C., employing a lye of 15-18 per cent strength and an amount of alkali preferably less than that ordinarily employed; the alkali cellulose is converted into xanthogenate while using an amount of carbon disulphide equal to 20 per cent of the cellulose taken and maintaining the temperature at 15-20 DEG C. or below; and finally the xanthogenate is dissolved in dilute caustic alkali lye at a temperature of 50 DEG C., at which temperature the viscose solution is maintained up to the moment of spinning which may take place immediately or after allowing the solution to stand for some time. Viscose solutions so prepared are of light colour, of high concentration, and may be spun in sulphuric acid or other usual baths.
