Abstract
Cellulose xanthate solution is made by a single stage process in which cellulose of solution viscosity less than 1 C.G.S. unit, water, caustic soda, and carbon disulphide are interacted at a temperature of 15--20 DEG C. in such proportions as to yield a viscose containing from 6--10 per cent each of cellulose and caustic soda. The fibre and the caustic soda solution may be mixed before the addition of the carbon disulphide. The cellulose of low solution viscosity may be obtained by pretreating wood with hot dilute mineral acid solution prior to extraction by means of alkaline liquor, or by after-treating wood pulp by means of a mercerizing liquor containing an oxidant, followed by a bleaching treatment. Preferably the low viscosity cellulose has an alpha cellulose content of at least 93 per cent. The xanthation may be carried out with such an amount of caustic soda solution as to yield a mixture containing about 9 per cent of caustic soda based on all the ingredients. The xanthate obtained is then diluted, preferably while still in the mixer. A method for determining solution viscosity is described.
