Abstract
319,291. Lilienfeld, L. April 14, 1928. Cellulose xanthates, and processes for making filaments and films therefrom; preparatory treatment of cellulose.-Viscose of improved qualities is obtained by treating the cellulose, before conversion into alkali cellulose, one or more times with an alkali solution containing not less than 18 per cent of caustic soda or an equivalent of another caustic alkali, and subsequently washing the treated cellulose, if required after removal of any excess alkali solution by pressing or centrifuging, either with water, or first with dilute alkali of, for example, not more than 12 per cent strength or with alkali solution of decreasing concentrations, and finally with water. The cellulose may be subjected to a preliminary treatment with dilute alkali solution. Before conversion into alkali cellulose, the material may be dried, or it may be used in the wet state, the caustic alkali being added either in the solid state or in the form of a concentrated solution. Viscoses obtained from the treated celluloses are of improved viscosity. and the artificial fibres, films &c. obtained therefrom exhibit an increased strength and elasticity. Specifications 212,865 and 216,828 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, alkali solutions of not less than 15 per cent strength may be used for the treatment of the cellulose, and the subsequent washing with water is optional.
