Abstract
557,324. Refining cellulosic materials. DREYFUS, H. May 11, 1942, No. 6328. [Class 2 (ii)] In the preparation of cellulose from wood or other ligno-cellulosic material, the material is first subjected to a treatment to remove the lignin and is then heated with a dilute aqueous solution of an acid, other than nitric or nitrous acid, then treated with an alkaline solution to dissolve hemicelluloses, and then the alkaline solution containing the hemicelluloses is removed from the materials. The acid used may by hydrochloric, sulphuric, oxalic, tartaric, or citric acid of a concentration of 0.05 to about 1.0 per cent. strength. The treatment may be carried out at 80-100‹C. for one half to three hours. Wood of poplar, beech, oak, or birch, or straw may be partially or wholly de-lignified by the sulphate, soda, bisulphite, chlorine, peroxide, or hypochlorite processes. The material may then be treated with a dilute solution of caustic soda for removal of residual lignin. The material may then be heated with the dilute acid. After the acid treatment, hemicelluloses may be removed by treatment with caustic soda solution of 6-15 per cent. strength at ordinary temperature. The material may then be treated with a 0.5-1 per cent. solution of caustic soda at 100‹-120‹C. and it may then be bleached. If desired, treatment with the dilute alkali may be carried out before treatment with the more concentrated alkali. In an example, straw is heated under pressure' with dilute caustic soda solution. The crude cellulose is mixed with calcium hypochlorite and water acidulated with hydrochloric acid. After several hours the bleached cellulose is boiled with dilute sodium carbonate solution, and then boiled for 2 hours with dilute hydrochloric acid solution. The cellulose is then treated with a solution of caustic soda of 12 per cent. strength at room temperature for one hour. It is boiled with dilute caustic soda, and then bleached with calcium hypochlorite. The cellulose produced by the process may be used for making high grade paper or for producing cellulose xanthate, cuprammonium cellulose solutions, cellulose acetate, or other cellulose derivatives. Specifications 438,435, 474,305, 477,842, 554,721 and 555,985 are referred to.
