Abstract

Solutions of cellulose in sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, or other acid or mixture of acids, suitable for the preparation of artificial silk, films, and the like, are prepared by treating the cellulose for a short time with a quantity of acid of a lower concentration than is necessary for dissolving the cellulose, so as to obtain a homogeneous suspension of fibres, and thereafter dissolving the fibres. A suitable acid for obtaining the suspension of fibres is sulphuric acid of 57--63 per cent, preferably 60 per cent concentration. In an example, a ten-fold quantity of 60 per cen sulphuric acid at 15 DEG C. is added to air-dry sheets of sulphite cellulose. The mass is stirred for a short time and sulphuric acid is added in such quantity that the concentration, disregarding the cellulose, is 63 per cent. The solution obtained may be spun in known manner.
