Abstract

Cellulose acetate filaments and films of high tensile strength are obtained by stretching them at a temperature of at least 35 DEG C. in an aqueous solution containing acetone in a concentration of less than 30 per cent by weight, and winding at a speed of at least 100 metres per minute, the filaments or films being introduced into the solution not in the finished state but swollen with acetone in the manner of a filament or film as it emerges from the spinneret. The products have a regular crystalline structure visible under X-rays. The temperature of the aqueous acetone solution may be near or above that of the boiling point of acetone. The concentration of the acetone is preferably between 20 and 30 per cent. The speed of stretching may be 300 metres a minute. The spinnerets used are of relatively large diameter. The spinning solution may be heated and for this purpose the coagulating liquid may be utilized. The filaments produced may be subjected to saponification to give them affinity for cotton dyes, and they may be subjected to swelling without tension so as to increase the elongation at breaking point. Specification 352,445 is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers also to the stretching of threads and films of cellulose acetate in solutions of dioxane of 43--55 per cent strength.
