Abstract

Filaments, threads, and other textile materials and foils, films, and the like having a basis of cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester or ether are subjected to stretching in contact with a body of heated water at a temperature not greater than 95 DEG C. Stretching may be effected during the travel of the materials through the water. If desired, the water may be under pressure. Materials composed of continuous filaments or spun yarns of short or long fibres may be treated. The esters may be of high or low acidyl content, and of low or high viscosity characteristics. The materials may be subjected to saponification treatment before being stretched. They may be of low or high lustre. The stretching may be low or high and it may be carried out rapidly or slowly. The threads may be stretched by rollers and while in warp formation. Stretching may be effected in one or several stages. The stretched materials may be allowed subsequently to shrink under the action of solvents or latent solvents, or they may be subjected to partial or complete saponification. Specifications 389,823, and 424,683, [Group IX], are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to stretching during application of cr<\>zepe twisting, and states that the stretching process is applicable to regenerated cellulose materials.
