Abstract

Artificial silk having tubular fibres is obtained by extruding viscose containing a substance capable of liberating a gas in the coagulating bath, giving the thread a travel of less than 25 centimetres in the bath and a travel of at least 150 centimetres in the air. The thread may be subjected to stretching on leaving the bath before being wound. The coagulating bath may comprise sulphuric acid and sodium sulphate in the concentrations and proportions indicated in Specification 255,527, [Class 2 (ii)]. The process leads to the production of tubular filaments substantially free from transverse striations when viewed microscopically. In an example, viscose containing sodium carbonate is ripened for three days and then spun in a bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, and zinc sulphate. The filaments travel 22 centimetres in the bath and 160 centimetres in the air before being wound. Specifications 143,253, 189,639, 189,973, 214,197, 267,187, 289,796, and 299,710, [all in Class 2 (ii)], also are referred to.
