Abstract

Artificial silk and like products are made from mixtures of organic esters of cellulose (more particularly cellulose acetate and formate) and nitrocellulose, in the form of solutions in acetone and its homologues either alone or mixed with ethyl alcohol, by treating the spun filaments either during their passage or while wound on bobbins or spools, with a concentrated solution of calcium chloride. As a solvent, a mixture of acetone and ethyl alcohol as directly obtained by a fermentation process may conveniently be employed. The filaments are finally denitrated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the preparation of filaments &c. from solutions of the organic esters of cellulose alone, and also the use as a coagulating-medium of solutions of inorganic substances generally, additional examples being dilute sulphuric acid and a solution of nitre coke. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
