Abstract

Cellulose is treated with strong sulphuric acid solution containing 60 per cent or more of sulphuric acid in the presence of a neutral inert organic liquid which is miscible with the sulphuric acid employed, e.g. methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, or amyl acetate, and the cellulose sulphate produced is separated and treated with an organic acid until the sulphuric acid radicle is replaced by the organic acid radicle. The organic liquid may be mixed with a second organic liquid, e.g. benzene, which itself is not miscible with the sulphuric acid. The process may be applied to the treatment of cellulose esters containing a small proportion of organic radicle. The following examples are given: (1) cotton is treated firstly with 84 per cent sulphuric acid in presence of ethyl acetate, and then with glacial acetic acid. (2) Sulphite pulp is treated as in (1) but using 90 per cent sulphuric acid. (3) Sulphite pulp is treated with 84 per cent sulphuric acid and ethyl acetate, separated, and acted upon with oleic acid. (4) Wood pulp is treated firstly with 84 per cent sulphuric acid and amyl acetate, and then with glacial acetic acid. The product is reacted with 98 per cent sulphuric acid in the presence of amyl acetate and benzene, separated, and finally treated with acetic acid. (5) Cotton linters are treated with a mixture comprising 90 per cent sulphuric acid, amyl acetate, and benzene, filtered off, and reacted with acetic acid. The Provisional Specification mentions also stearic acid as a suitable organic acid.
