Abstract
273,743. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Schneider, G., and Dreyfus, C.). July 2, 1926, [Convention date]. Cellulose acetates and other carboxylates; cellulose nitrates.-The viscosity characteristics of cellulose esters, particularly cellulose acetates, are lowered by treatment with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an irou salt preferably a ferrous salt. The treatment may he carried out with the ester in suspension or in solution as in the original acetylation mixture. In examples, a solution of cellulose acetate in acetic acid as obtained on the completion of the acetylation process, is treated with hydrogen peroxide solution and ferrous acetate, and then allowed to stand; alternatively, if the acetylation is carried out in an iron vessel, the addition of the iron salt may be omitted; cellulose is acetylated by means of a mixture of acetic anhydride, acetic acid, and sulphuric acid containing a small proportion of ferrous acetate, and after completion of the acetylation, hydrogen peroxide solution is added; cellulose butyrate dissolved in acetic or butyric acid as obtained by carrying out the esterification in an iron vessel, is treated with hydrogen peroxide solution. The treatment may also be applied to nitrocellulose in the form of a neutral solid. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), refers to the treatment of cellulose esters with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of iron. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
