Abstract

Cellulose is subjected to a pre-treatment process to render it more reactive and is then treated with acetic or propionic anhydride crotonic acid, and a non-solvent of the cellulose ester produced whereby the fibrous state of the cellulose is preserved. The crotonic acid may be added at the esterification stage or carried over in the cellulose from a pre-treatment with crotonic acid. The process may be modified by using a reaction product of crotonic acid and acetic or propionic anhydride as the esterifying agent. The cellulose may be pretreated with crotonic acid, or a mixture of crotonic acid and acetic or propionic anhydride, or the reaction product of crotonic acid and acetic or propionic anhydride denuded of excess of lower anhydride, e.g. by fractional distillation, and the pre-treated cellulose may then be esterified by acetic or propionic acid alone or together with the crotonic reaction product. Carbon tetrachloride, isopropyl ether, or butyl ether, may be used as non-solvent. The cellulose esters produced are soluble in acetone. Their unsaturated radicles may be halogenated. In an example, linters are pre-treated with acetic acid and a little sulphuric acid. After pressing off, the treated linters are immersed in a mixture of crotonic acid, acetic anhydride and carbon tetrachloride. The temperature is slowly raised from below 15 to 35 DEG C. and then to 50 DEG C. The fibrous ester produced is washed with carbon tetrachloride and then steamed.
