Abstract

Cellulose acetates are prepared by treating cellulosic material in an acetylating bath which contains a relatively small quantity of sulphur dioxide, for example, not more than 5 per cent calculated on the weight of the bath. According to one method of procedure, the sulphur dioxide is added to the pretreatment bath comprising a lower fatty acid and also, if desired, acetic anhydride and/or sulphuric acid, the main bulk of the anhydride necessary for the acetylation being added subsequently. Alternatively, the sulphur dioxide may be added to the acetylation bath before the addition of the cellulosic material. When working according to the former method, the temperature during pretreatment preferably does not exceed 20 DEG C. in the event that lower fatty acid is used alone, or 10 DEG C. when acetic anhydride or sulphuric acid is present. According to examples, (1) cotton linters are pretreated with glacial acetic acid and sulphur dioxide, and then introduced into a mixture of glacial acetic acid, acetic anhydride, and concentrated sulphuric acid; (2) cotton linters are pretreated with glacial acetic acid containing concentrated sulphuric acid and sulphur dioxide, and then introduced into a mixture of acetic acid and acetic anhydride; (3) cotton linters are introduced into a mixture of acetic acid, acetic anhydride, sulphuric acid, and sulphur dioxide; (4) cotton linters are pretreated with acetic acid, acetic anhydride, and sulphur dioxide, and then acetylated by means of a mixture of acetic acid, acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid.
