Abstract

Cellulosic material such as cotton or wood-pulp, for the production of fatty or aromatic acid esters of cellulose, is first hydrolyzed by subjecting it to the action of water at a temperature greater than 100 DEG C., and is thereafter directly esterified. According to a modification of the process, a small proportion of an organic acid, such as 1 to 2 per cent of acetic acid may be added to the water. In examples, (1) cotton linters are pretreated for 2 to 3 hours with 4 to 5 times their weight of water heated to a temperature of 140-145 DEG C.; (2) cotton linters are heated for one hour with 4 to 5 times their weight of water containing from 1 to 2 per cent of acetic acid at approximately 110-120 DEG C. After the pretreatment, the cellulose may be washed and dried, and if desired subjected to bleaching, or the pretreated material may be directly acetylated, formylated, butyrated, benzoylated, or the like.
