Abstract

Solutions of cellulose acetate suitable for direct spinning are made by employing in the acetylation in place of acetic acid, a solvent of a boiling point not exceeding 60 DEG C., for example, ethyl formate or methyl acetate. The initial material may be cellulose, or a cellulose containing a small amount of loosely combined water such as is obtained by treating cellulose in a beating-machine, or a partly-hydrolyzed product obtained by treating cellulose with glacial acetic acid, a little acetic anhydride, and a catalyst. On completion of the acetylation, precipitating or neutralizing-agents may be added to remove the catalyst and any excess of anhydride and acetic acid. A coloured solution for the spinning of coloured filaments is obtained by adding a dyestuff during the action or at its completion.
