Abstract

Cellulose acetate-formate is produced by mixing cellulose with formic-acetic anhydride and then carrying out the esterification in the presence of an esterification catalyst and a diluent. The cellulosic material employed, which may be pretreated with formic and/or acetic acids containing a small quantity of sulphuric acid, may be cotton, cotton linters, wood pulp, regenerated cellulose, or cellulose obtained from grass, straw, husks, etc. Specified catalysts are sulphuric, hydrochloric and phosphoric acids, phosphorus pentoxide and zinc chloride. Specified diluents which may be solvents or non-solvents for the cellulose acetate-formate, are formic and/or acetic acids, benzene, toluene, and carbon tetrachloride. By varying the proportions of diluent and catalyst employed, esters of varying acetyl and formyl contents are produced. In the examples, the esterification continues for 7 or 24 hours during which time a peak temperature of 30 DEG C. is attained. Water is added to the mixture and the ester is precipitated, washed and dried.
