Abstract
Organic acid esters of cellulose are prepared by esterifying cellulose with an organic acid anhydride in the presence of an inorganic acid catalyst, neutralizing part or all of the catalyst before the ripening operation and continuously incorporating water during a substantial part of the ripening operation. The cellulosic material may be cotton, cotton linters, wood pulp or regenerated cellulose or other cellulosic material derived from such sources as grasses, straws and hulls. The cellulose may be pretreated with acetic or formic acid or a mixture of these acids to which a small proportion of sulphuric acid may be added. The acid catalyst is preferably sulphuric acid, but phosphoric acid or a mixture of phosphoric and sulphuric acids may be used. Before ripening, the catalyst is wholly or partly neutralized by the addition of an acetate of magnesium, calcium or zinc, or oxides, carbonates or hydroxides of various metals. The water for ripening is preferably added in the form of dilute acetic acid. Ripening may be carried out at 50-117 DEG C., water being added continuously until at total of 1 to 12 times the weight of the cellulose has been added. Ripening is then continued until the desired acetyl value is obtained. In an example, cotton linters are acetylated with a mixture of acetic anhydride, glacial acetic acid and sulphuric acid for three hours, the peak temperature being 37 DEG C. Excess anhydride is destroyed by the addition of just sufficient water, and part of the sulphuric acid is neutralized by the addition of a neutralizing agent. The solution is maintained at 33 DEG C. for 30 minutes and then at 60 DEG C. for one hour. Ripening is then carried out, water being added continuously for a period of 10 hours. Ripening is continued for a further 16 hours before precipitation of the acetate by the addition of water. The acetate obtained has an acetyl value of 44.3 per cent calculated as acetic acid.
