Abstract

Polysaccharides other than cellulose, such as starches, dextrin, glycogen and inulin are esterified by pretreating with an aqueous organic acid, and then esterifying with formic acid solely or with an organic acid anhydride with or without the corresponding acid. The acid employed for the pretreatment is preferably a lower aliphatic acid and may correspond with the ester group or one of the ester groups to be introduced into the initial material, and a small proportion of a catalyst such as sulphuric or phosphoric acid may be added. In examples, (1) potato starch is pretreated with 50 parts glacial acetic acid and 5 parts water at 60 DEG C. for an hour, and the cooled mass is esterified with acetic anhydride and glacial acetic acid; (2) potato starch is pretreated with 20 parts formic acid, 10 parts water, and 4 parts sulphuric acid and is then esterified with formic acid; after 10 hours the starch formate is precipitated by adding sodium acetate solution.
