Abstract
In the production of cellulose organic acidesters, e.g cellulose acetate, by esterifying cellulose with an organic acid anhydride in the presence of a mineral acid esterification catalyst, e.g. sulphuric or phosphoric acid, and a solvent for the ester, a neutralizing compound of a metal of Group II of the Periodic Table or of aluminium is added to the primary esterification solution in an amount at least equivalent or nearly equivalent to the amount of the acid catalyst, after which the solution is ripened at a temperature of at least 125 DEG C. under pressure. Specified neutralizing agents are the acetates of magnesium, zinc, aluminium, calcium, strontium or barium, the oxides or hydroxides of barium or strontium and magnesium carbonate. Water is added to the primary solution during the ripening operation in one or two stages in which latter case the first addition may be effected by the injection of steam, which also serves to heat the solution to the desired temperature. The ripened ester is finally precipitated from solution by the addition of more water. The process effects the ripening in a relatively short time and produces esters of high stability. Numerous examples are given.
