Abstract

In the manufacture of simple or mixed butyric acid esters of cellulose the cellulosic material is thoroughly swollen and brought to a reactive condition by pretreatment with glacial acetic acid under vacuum, preferably at a low temperature, for example, 15-20 DEG C. The pretreatment may be conducted in presence of a diluent such as butyric acid or acetone. After the pretreatment excess of liquid is removed by centrifuging or by pressing and, if a simple butyrate not containing acetic acid residues is to be prepared, the remaining acetic acid is eliminated by lixiviation with the diluent employed. The used bath may be concentrated for re-use. In an example, linters, optionally bleached, are immersed in glacial acetic acid under vacuum for 1 1/4 hours at a temperature of 20 DEG C.
