Abstract

510,705. Nitro-cellulose. KODAK, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1938, No. 3480. Convention date, Feb. 4, 1937. [Class 2(ii)] Cellulose, having a cuprammonium viscosity of not more than 12 seconds, and not more than 7 per cent. of which is soluble in 7.14 per cent. caustic soda or 10 per cent. caustic potash, is nitrated with a nitrating bath containing 14-35 per cent. nitric acid, 66-47 per cent. sulphuric acid and a total combined content of nitric and sulphuric acids of 79-83 per cent., the sum of the equivalent percentages of these acids (which are determined by dividing the percentage of each acid by its equivalent weight) being 1.57 to 1.52. The method of determining the cuprammonium viscosity of the cellulose is indicated. The nitrocellulose obtained by the process is completely soluble in methyl alcohol, and sheeting made therefrom, for instance by coating out a solution thereof in methyl alcohol containing a little acetone, may be employed as a base for photographic film. Examples are given of the nitration of refined cotton linters, but refined wood pulp, particularly refined sulphite pulp, may also be used.
