Abstract

The process described in the parent Specification for preparing solutions of cellulose by dissolving cellulose in sulphuric acid of over 60 per cent concentration and adding a diluent which is soluble in the solvent until the concentration of the sulphuric acid is lower than 60 per cent, is improved or modified by using as diluent, sulphuric acid of at the most 45 per cent concentration, or viscous substances such as glucose or glycerine. Examples of suitable diluents are 30 per cent sulphuric acid, 20 per cent sulphuric acid made somewhat viscous with glucose, and a mixture of glucose and water. The solutions may be employed for the production of artificial silk, films, and the like. Specification 427,611 is referred to.
