Abstract

A solution of starch or starchy matter in a large quantity of strong sulphuric acid and consisting of products intermediate between starch and glucose, is used in the setting-bath in the place of glucose in the manufacture of filaments, films, &c. from viscose according to Specification 21405/07. Preferably, the moisture content of the starch &c. is reduced to 5 per cent or less, and the dried starch is added rapidly and with continuous stirring to the acid which has been previously cooled to below 0 DEG C., for example to -5 DEG C.; after an homogeneous mixture has been obtained, the liquid is allowed to warm up spontaneously in order to complete the solution of the starch; before use, the mixture is diluted with water, and to the solution may be added sulphuric acid, sodium, ammonium or magnesium sulphates, or a zinc salt. Specifications 10094/06, 5595/08, and 406/11 also are referred to.ALSO:A solution containing products intermediate between starch and glucose is obtained by dissolving starch or starchy materials in a large quantity of strong sulphuric acid. Preferably, the moisture content of the search, &c. is reduced to 5 per cent or less, and the dried starch is added rapidly and with continuous stirring to the acid which has been previously cooled to below 0 DEG C., for example to -5 DEG C.; after an homogeneous mixture has been obtained, the liquid is allowed to warm up spontaneously to complete the solution of the starch.
