Abstract
264,181. Soc. Lyonnaise de Soie Artificielle, and Chevalet, P. A. A. Jan. 11, 1926, [Convention date]. Cellulose acetates; preparatory treatment of cellulose.-Cellulose is rendered active and capable of producing acetates giving viscous solutions by treatment at ordinary temperature or in the cold, with 80-90 per cent formic acid to which has been added sulphuric acid or zinc chloride in proportion less than 10 per cent of the whole mixture. This treatment avoids depolymerization of the cellulose molecule. The bath may be prepared by treating sodium formate with sulphuric acid. After treatment with the acid, the excess of the latter is removed, and the product is washed and dried. When using cellulose which has been pretreated in this manner, only traces of sulphuric acid are required to effect acetylation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the use of 100 per cent formic acid without any addition. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
