Abstract

A process for the manufacture and production of cotton or regenerated cellulose fibres resistant to substantive dyestuffs consists in partially acetylating the cotton or regenerated cellulose fibres by treatment with acetic anhydride in the presence of acetic acid and as catalyst--a mixture of zinc chloride and an alkali metal acetate. The required acetylation is effected in a moderately short time without the use of a high temperature and the finished fibres have a high wet tenacity. In an example 50 ccs. of a mixture of 90 per cent glacial acetic acid and 10 parts anhydrous zinc chloride are mixed with 20 ccs. of a mixture of 90 parts glacial acetic acid and 10 parts anhydrous potassium or sodium acetate and 50 ccs. of 99 per cent acetic anhydride are added. A 3 gram skein of air-dryed viscose rayon is soaked for 18 hours at 35 DEG C., in acetic acid of 77 per cent strength, drained, and immersed in the above described mixture for 48 hours at 35 DEG C. It is then washed and dried and contains about 30 per cent combined acetic acid. Another example describes the application of the invention to cotton. Specifications 5016/07, [Class 2], 280,493, [Class 15 (ii)], and 353,978 are referred to.
