Abstract

Fireproof filaments are formed by wet-spinning a concentrated syrupy aqueous solution of a salt of a cellulose hydroxy fatty acid into an aqueous solution of an aluminium salt adapted to coagulate the filament and replace the cation of the cellulosic salt by aluminium. A salt of the necessary solubility and viscosity may be prepared by etherifying alkali cellulose in more than one stage, e.g. first with 3/4 mols. sodium chloracetate and then with 3/4 mols. ethyl chloracetate. The viscosity should be such as to permit of spinning at a concentration of not less than 15 per cent, and the pH of the solution should be brought to 5.5 to 8, for example, by the addition of nitric acid. The deaerated solution is passed through a filter to a spinneret and into a coagulating bath containing aluminium sulphate and sodium sulphate maintained at a pH of from 3 to 5 and a temperature of 55-60 DEG C. A succession of coagulating baths may be employed.
