Abstract

510,131. Artificial textile fibres from casein. FERRETTI, A. Feb. 7, 1938, No. 34650. Convention date, March 2, 1937. Divided out of 510,616. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial fibres are obtained by spinning an alkaline colloidal solution of casein, or a mixture of casein and viscose, into the residue from the coagulating baths employed in the manufacture of viscose rayon, said residue having a density greater than 1.18 and a sulphuric acid content greater than 25 grams per litre. The band of fibres may be rendered insoluble in a bath of which the temperature exceeds 25‹C. The fibres leaving the coagulating bath may be passed through a solution containing sodium chloride with or without formaldehyde, followed if desired, by a preliminary bath for rendering the fibres insoluble, which contains sodium chloride and aluminium salts with or without formaldehyde or other soluble alkaline or alkaline earth salts. The coagulated fibres may be stretched and the stretched fibres conveyed under tension through the solutions. After the insoluble fibres have been dried they may be treated with aqueous solutions of mono-, di-, or tri-sodium phosphate with or without addition of formaldehyde. The fibres, containing mixed casein and viscose, or casein only, may be desulphurized in the baths normally employed for this purpose, to which has been added sodium chloride or other soluble alkaline or alkaline earth salt, with or without formaldehyde. Specification 483,731 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use, in place of the residues of coagulation baths from the viscose process, of other baths having a density above 1.18 and a sulphuric acid content above 25 grams per litre, the sodium sulphate being replaced by other soluble sulphates or chlorides, e.g., zinc sulphate, ammonium sulphate and ammonium chloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. '
