Abstract
In the manufacture of artificial filaments by the cuprammonium process in which the warm water used as precipitant is renewed so that the ammonia concentration does not exceed 0.05 per cent, the ammonia is recovered from the precipitant by precipitation as magnesium ammonium phosphate.ALSO:Ammonia present in waste liquors resulting from the manufacture of artificial silk by the cuprammonium process is recovered by precipitation as magnesium ammonium phosphate, which may be treated with an amount of sulphuric or other acid equivalent to the ammonia, the ammonia being then recovered, for example, as ammonium sulphate. Examples of the process are given.ALSO:Ammonia present in waste liquors resulting from the manufacture of artificial silk by the cuprammonium process is recovered by precipitation as magnesium ammonium phosphate. The liquors may be treated with solutions of magnesium chloride and sodium phosphate, or alternatively, precipitation may be effected by direct addition of an hydrated magnesium hydrogen phosphate, such as the phosphate MgHPO4.7H2O. The latter compound may be prepared from other magnesium phosphates, such as that obtained by heating magnesium ammonium phosphate, by dissolving them in acid, such as sulphuric acid, and precipitating the desired phosphate by addition of soda, the precipitation being effected either as a separate step or directly in the presence of the waste liquors. An hydrated magnesium hydrogen phosphate suitable for use in the process may be prepared also by treating the obtained magnesium ammonium phosphate with an amount of sulphuric or other acid equivalent to the ammonia. Examples of the process are given.
