Abstract
A solution of sodium hydrate, which may be of 20 per cent strength, is made by caustifying sodium carbonate with lime in two stages. In the first stage the concentrations are such that the double salt Na2CO3-CaCO3 is not formed in appreciable quantity, then the precipitated calcium carbonate is separated, and to the solution more lime and sodium carbonate are added, the double carbonate being produced. The solution obtained contains about 5-6 per cent of sodium carbonate. The double carbonate may be decomposed with water to obtain sodium carbonate.ALSO:The caustification of sodium carbonate solution is effected in two stages, in the first of which a partial caustification is effected with the production of calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate is separated and the solution is treated with more lime and sodium carbonate, when the double carbonate is formed.
