Abstract
513,910. Filaments and films from vegetable globulin. FIELDSEND, E. C., BOYES, W. H. D., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 21, 1938, No. 8659. [Class 2 (ii)] Films, filaments and the like made by coagulating and hardening dispersions of denatured vegetable globulin in aqueous media, are rendered more resistant to attack by boiling water or hot dilute acids by treating them, during or after the hardening operation, and preferably at a raised temperature, with a concentrated aqueous solution of a freely soluble halide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or of ammonium or magnesium, said solution containing a low concentration of a hydrogen halide. The solution preferably contains not less than 30 parts of salt to 100 parts of water, and the concentration of hydrogen halide preferably lies between 0.5 and 1.5 per cent. The articles may be subjected to a subsequent treatment with a weakly alkaline solution. The following examples are given : (1) and (2), Protein extracted from pea-nuts by the process of Specification 513,896, is spun as described in Specification 467,704, and treated in a bath comprising saturated salt solution and hydrochloric acid. (3) Filaments spun as in (1) are treated in a bath containing formaldehyde, hydrochloric acid and salt. (4) to (7) Pea-nut protein and urea are dissolved in water and the solution spun into a bath containing sulphuric acid and sodium sulphate decahydrate. After stapling, the fibres are treated in a bath containing salt (calcium chloride or ammonium chloride), formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid. (8) and (9) Fibres are spun and coagulated as in (4), hardened in 30 per cent. formaldehyde, and treated in a saturated salt solution containing hydrochloric acid. (10) The treatment of (8) is modified by using one 'of the following salts-potassium chloride, lithium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, strontium chloride, barium chloride, potassium bromide, or potassium iodide.
