Abstract
Regenerated cellulose articles, e.g. artificial filaments, made by the viscose process are purified by subjecting them while in the gel state to successive or simultaneous treatment with a dilute aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide or chlorous acid and a dilute aqueous solution of a sequestering agent such as sodium hexamethaphosphate. The filaments may first be subjected to a pre-wash with water to remove some or most of the acid carried over from the coagulating bath. Chlorous acid is preferably formed in solution by the action of an acid on an alkali metal chlorite, and the acid so employed may be added directly to the solution or may be present as residual acid in the filaments. Examples are given, in one of which, viscose yarn is purified by washing first with aqueous sodium hexamethaphosphate at 57 DEG C., then with an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite containing sulphuric acid and sodium hexametaphosphate at 57 DEG C., then with water at 57 DEG C., then with aqueous ammonium sulphide at 40 DEG C., and finally with water at 57 DEG C.
