Abstract

757,521. Artificial filaments, films, &c. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH. Oct. 21, 1953 [Dec. 4, 1952], No. 29087/53. Class 2 (2). Threads, fibres, films and like products are made in a continuous manner according to the free-bath system by extruding viscose into a coagulating bath containing sulphuric or other acid and salts thereof, passing the extruded products through an acid-treatment bath containing sulphuric acid and salts thereof, the molar ratio of said salts to the acid being greater than 1: 1 and the xanthate ratio of the extruded products being thereby reduced below 0.02, washing or otherwise freeing the products from liquid from the acid-treatment bath, impregnating the products with acid, passing the products through a bath containing an aqueous alkaline solution of a chlorite maintained at a pH between 7 and 12, the concentration of chlorite in said solution being not less than 2A/5Z gram-moles per litre, where A is the concentration in gram-equivalents per litre of alkalifying agent in the solution and Z is the number of gram-equivalents of acid introduced into the chlorite bath by the products per kilogram dry weight of cellulose, the xanthate ratio of the products being thereby reduced to below 0.003, and subsequently subjecting the products to the conventional after-treatments such as washing, desulphurization, bleaching and drying. The chlorite solution, e.g. sodium chlorite solution, is preferably employed at a temperature above 70‹ C. For the acid treatment prior to the chlorite treatment, sulphuric acid is preferably employed, although any inorganic or organic acid, even formic acid, may be used.
