Abstract
Artificial filaments, fibres, threads and like products are produced from viscous alkaline peanut globulin solutions by extrusion from a multi-hole spinneret into an acidic saline solution and, if desired, passed into one or more non-swelling saline solutions prior to insolubilization, all saline solutions being at a temperature less than 40 DEG C., and are then led on to one or more supporting surfaces against which they are pressed with substantial stress, the process being characterized in that at least the saline solution preceding the first such supporting surface includes therein a cationic surface active agent. The latter may be an alkyl quaternary ammonium halide such as cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide or an alkyl pyridinium halide such as cetyl pyridinium bromide. About 0.1-2 per cent on the weight of the liquor may be used. In an example an aged solution of peanut protein (28 per cent protein, 1.45 per cent sodium hydroxide) is extruded through a 500-hole spinneret into an aqueous bath containing 3 per cent sulphuric acid and 19 per cent sodium sulphate at 28 DEG C. The filaments are then passed into a nearly saturated sodium chloride bath containing 0.5 per cent cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide at 20 DEG C. The filaments so produced are collected in hank form on a pair of rollers, on one of which the hank is allowed to drain while hanging under its own weight.
