Abstract

1283529 Tubular filaments COURTAULDS Ltd 19 Dec 1969 [20 Dec 1968] 60676/68 Heading B5B Tubular filaments of regenerated cellulose are made by extruding a viscose, containing 6À5- 9À5% by weight of cellulose, 5À0-7À0% by weight of caustic soda, 3À0-4À0% by weight of anhydrous sodium carbonate, and 0À75-2À0% by weight of polyethylene glycol, based on the weight of cellulose, and heeving a salt figure of 12 to 18, into a spinning bath, containing 8-10% by weight of sulphuric acid, 1À0-3À0% by weight of anhydrous zinc sulphate, and 20À0- 26-0% by weight of anhydrous sodium sulphate, at a temperature of 25‹ to 45‹ C., the filaments formed being directed along an immersion path of a length between 30 and 185 cms., and then stretched by at least 40%. The viscose used in the process may have a concentration in carbon disulphide of 33 to 50% by weight based on the weight of cellulose, and a ball fall viscosity of 30-180 seconds at 18‹ C. The stretching operation is suitably carried out in a hot aqueous bath containing about 2% by weight of sulphuric acid, at a temperature of 95‹ C., and the filaments may be stretched in the bath to a value approaching the stretch at which the filaments break, preferably about 10% below that degree of stretch. In this way filaments having an initial wet modulus of up to 10 at 2% extension and up to 12 at 5% extension may be obtained, and examination of the cross-section of such filaments shows that 90% of the filaments by number have not collapsed to the flat state. An example of the process is given.
