Abstract

Filaments, ribbons and foils are formed by spinning a viscose solution having a gamma number above 60 into a bath of low electrolyte content at room temperature, the regenerated cellulose having a degree of polymerization above 300, the filaments, &c., being stretched continuously with their formation in such a way that the speed of travel after stretching is not greater than 12 metres per minute. The gamma number is defined as the number of mols of carbon bisulphide combined per anhydro glucose radical multiplied by 100. The spinning bath comprises per litre between 10 and 40 grams of sulphuric acid and up to 100 grams of sodium sulphate with no other metal salt but optionally with the addition of lauryl pyridinium chloride or sulphate. In making the cellulose xanthate, material containing cellulose of high molecular weight is treated with caustic soda, and the ripening of the alkali cellulose is omitted. Viscose solutions having a gamma number above 60 may have a cellulose content of 4-11 per cent by weight and caustic soda of 3-12 per cent by weight. The stretching may be up to 400 per cent and may take place partially or wholly in the bath or partially or wholly in air, and may be performed between driven rolls rotating at different speeds or by friction by means of tubular rods.
