Abstract
553,797. Artificial filaments, films, &c. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. Dec. 3, 1941, No. 15597. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1940. [Class 2 (ii)] Regenerated cellulose yarns, filaments, or films (including sheets, tubes, and the like) are obtained by extruding viscose at a speed of at least 5,000 inches (127 metres) per minute into an acid coagulating and regenerating bath maintained at a temperature of at least 60C. The optimum temperature for the coagulating and regenerating bath increases with increase in the spinning speed and also varies slightly with the denier of the yarn being spun, the composition of the viscose and the composition of the coagulating bath. Speeds of 5,000-10,000 or more inches per minute and bath temperatures of 60-100C. or more may be used. Viscoses of usual composition may be used, e.g. those containing 6-8 per cent. of cellulose and 4-8 per cent. of alkali, and ripened to any desired degree, e.g. to a salt index of 4-8. The acid coagulating and regenerating bath may be of known type, e.g. 7-15 per cent. of sulphuric acid together with glucose, sodium and ammonium sulphates, and if desired, zinc, iron or nickel sulphate. The spinning may be carried out at low or high tension.
