Abstract

1,171,839. Producing viscose rayon filaments- TEIJIN Ltd. 15 Aug., 1967, No. 37432/67. Heading B5B. Viscose rayon filaments having a high wet modulus are produced by high-speed spinning wherein viscose having a gamma value at the time of spinning of 65-80 and containing cellulose having a degree of polymerization within the range 400 and 700 is extruded at a temperature within the range 35‹ to 60‹ C. into an aqueous spinning bath containing 4 to 6% by weight of sulphuric acid, 3 to 6% of sodium sulphate and 0À001 to 0À1% of zinc sulphate maintained at a temperature of, for example, 30‹ to 60‹ C. The viscose is characterized in that the relationship between the degree of polymerization of the cellulose contained in it, the cellulose content of the viscose and the total sodium content of the viscose (expressed as the percentage by weight of sodium hydroxide in the viscose) is such as to satisfy both the following formulµ:- wherein #DP is the average degree of polymerization of the cellulose in the viscose, CC is the percentage by weight of cellulose in the viscose and TA is the total sodium content of the viscose expressed as sodium hydroxide. The heating of the viscose to 35‹ to 60‹ C. is effected immediately before it is spun. The filaments formed are preferably stretched between first and second godets after being withdrawn from the spinning bath at a stretch ratio of 1À2 to 1À8. The rate of removal of the solvent from the filaments on the first godet over which the filaments pass after being withdrawn from the spinning bath is specified as being 40 to 60% and the filaments are then stretched. The spinning speed is specified to be at least 80 metres per minute using a "horizontal type" spinning machine. The expression "rate of solvent removal" is defined as the rate at which the solvent (the aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide) is expelled from the viscose during the spinning step and is expressed as the ratio of the amount of the solvent removed during the spinning step to the amount of solvent in the original viscose, expressed as a percentage by weight. The ratio is calculated using the formula wherein R represents the ratio, C 2 is the cellulose content of the filament during the spinning step and C 1 is the cellulose content of the viscose. C 2 is determined by washing and centrifuging a sample of the filaments in the gel state, weighing the filaments (A grams), treating the filaments with a dilute aqueous solution of sulphuric acid, and then weighing them (B grams) after washing and drying them. C 2 is then calculated by means of the formula
