Abstract

1,035,244. Viscose spinning. COURTAULDS NORTH AMERICA Inc. April 1, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 12735/63. Heading B5B. High tenacity viscose rayon filaments are made by extruding viscose into a coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid and sodium sulphate in the presence of 0À5-2À0% by weight of formaldehyde to form filaments, withdrawing the filaments from the bath when they are no more than 20% regenerated, and subsequently stretching the filaments in a hot aqueous secondary bath and maintaining the acid concentration in the secondary bath at less than 0À5% by weight of sulphuric acid. The viscose may be made from pulp where cellulose has a degree of polymerization of 300-600, preferably over 600. Preferably the alkali cellulose is not aged, and the viscose spun without substantial ageing. It may contain 2-7% cellulose and 2-9% sodium hydroxide, and may have a sodium chloride salt figure of 12 to 23, a gamma number of not less than 60, normally 75 to 90, or higher, and a ball fall viscosity of 30-400 secs. Formaldehyde may be added to the viscose. The coagulating bath may contain 3-9% by weight sulphuric acid, 4-18% by weight sodium sulphate, (Na 2 SO 4 ) zinc sulphate being absent or below 0À2% of the anhydrous salt, and preferably contains 0À5- 1À0% by weight of formaldehyde. The coagulating bath temperature may be 20-35‹ C. The filaments are then passed through the aqueous secondary bath containing not more than 0À5% by weight sulphuric acid, suitably at 60‹-80‹ C., and suitably containing less than 1À0% by weight of formaldehyde, and may be stretched 150À350%. In examples, filaments of 1À20-1À55 denier so made have tenacities exceeding 5 g/denier.
