Abstract

952,390. Viscose spinning. MITSUBISHI RAYON CO. Ltd. Oct. 26, 1961 [Oct. 27, 1960], No. 38425/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5B. Regenerated cellulose filaments of 0.5-30 denier are made by extruding a viscose of viscosity 100-500 poises and a salt point of 9-20 into a coagulating bath held at 10- 30‹ C. containing 0.01%-0.07% anhydrous zinc sulphate, 1-10% anhydrous sodium sulphate, and a limited concentration of sulphuric acid provided by the following equations: Minimum sulphuric acid concentration (%) by weight: = 0.33A + 0.02B - 5C + 0.13#D - 0.24 Maximum sulphuric acid concentration (%) by weight: = 0.38A + 0.02B + 2C + 0.27 #D - 0.5 where A = % NaOH in the viscose, B = % Na 2 SO 4 in the coagulating bath, C = % ZnSO 4 in the coagulating bath, and D is the single filament denier of the fibres to be spun. Preferably, viscose having a degree of polymerization of its cellulose of 400-500, a viscosity of 150-400 poises and a salt point of 12-16 is extruded into a coagulating bath containing 0.02%-0.04% anhydrous zinc sulphate, 1-5% anhydrous sodium sulphate, the sulphuric acid concentration being determined by the above equations. Alkali cellulose is preferably xanthalted with 40-50%, based on the cellulose, of carbon disulphide, to make the viscose. Suitably the coagulating bath temperature is 15-25- C. and the immersion length of the filaments is 20-50 cm. The tow of extruded filaments may be led through a spinning tube immersed in the coagulating bath and positioned near the spinneret and on withdrawal from the bath may be stretched in air or alternatively in a second bath containing less than 4% by weight of sulphuric acid and held at above 50‹ C. Filaments so made (which may be of very low denier) have a high Young's modulus in the wet state, low water swelling, a high strength, a high knot strength and good dyeability.
