Abstract

Regenerated cellulose filaments are produced from viscose by extruding viscose containing at least 0.1 millimol., preferably 1 to 10 millimols., per 100 grams of viscose of an aryl thiourea having the general formula (R1R2)N.CS.N (R3R4), where R1 and R3 are hydrogen or aliphatic or aryl radicals and R2 and R4 are aryl radicals, into an aqueous coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate (preferably 0.5 to 15 per cent). In the example viscose containing 7.4 per cent of cellulose, 7 of caustic soda, 1.1 of combined sulphur and 1.0 millimol. per 100 grams of viscose of thiocarbanilide, aged 48 hours and having a salt figure of 5.7, is spun into an aqueous coagulating bath containing 9.5 per cent of sulphuric acid, 20 of sodium sulphate and 4.5 of zinc sulphate. The length of immersion in the bath is 24 inches, the temperature of the bath is 48 DEG C. and the rate of withdrawal of the thread from the bath is 28 metres per minute. The thread is then passed through a dilute sulphuric acid bath at 95 DEG C. and stretched 80 per cent. The filaments have a non-crenulated surface and a lower water imbibition and gel swelling factor than unmodified filaments.
