Abstract

509,702. Artificial filaments, ribbons &c. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Jan. 19, 1938, No. 1772. Convention date, Jan. 19, 1937. [Class 2 (ii)] Filaments, threads, filaments, bands &c. are made from cellulose acetate soluble in chloroform by spinning a crude acetic acid solution of the cellulose acetate at an elevated temperature into an aqueous inorganic salt solution at a lower temperature. The crude cellulose acetate solution may be those produced by the usual acetylation processes, preferably those employing only small amounts of catalyst, e.g., sulphuric acid as described in Specification 337,366, [Class 2 (ii)]. The acetic acid content of the cellulose acetate may vary between 59-62.5 per cent. and is preferably between 60-61.5 per cent., the cellulose acetate as first obtained being subjected to a slight hydrolysis. Before spinning the acetylation catalyst is neutralized and the crude cellulose acetate solution is brought to a suitable cellulose acetate content-preferably 12-16 per cent. ; it is stated that a small content 2-6 per cent. of methylene chloride and water has a beneficial effect in the spinning process. The cellulose acetate spinning solution is then heated to 50-90‹C. depending on the viscosity of the solution, the higher viscosities necessitating higher temperatures. The coagulating bath may consist of solutions of sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium acetate, calcium chloride, and ammonium salts such as the chloride, sulphate or acetate ; the concentration may be 10-30 per cent. and the temperature below about 30 ‹C. The coagulating liquid is preferably caused to act on the precipitated filaments in counter current, the quantity and velocity thereof being so chosen that the acetic acid content of the precipitating liquid increases up to 15-30 per cent. Specifications 341,148 and 418,480 also are referred to.
