Abstract

Spinning solutions of water-soluble cellulose ethers in a solvent mixture consisting of water and a water-miscible organic liquid or liquids are extruded into a coagulating bath consisting essentially of an organic liquid or liquids miscible in all proportions with the mixture of water and organic liquid or liquids used as the solvent in the spinning solution. The process is applicable to water-soluble methyl cellulose, hydroxy-ethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, and hydroxyethyl ethyl cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose. Filaments, films and foils may be produced. Preferably methyl cellulose as a 15-25 per cent solution in 60-80 per cent by volume aqueous acetic acid is extruded into a bath of acetone, which may contain up to 5 or 7 per cent of water. The extrusion is preferably carried out at room temperature, but higher or lower temperatures may be used. Other suitable solvents are propionic acid, or other lower fatty acids, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, monoethyl or other lower alkyl mono-ether of ethylene glycol and dioxane. The coagulating bath may be methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone or other lower aliphatic ketone, octyl or other normally liquid alcohol containing more than five carbon atoms, or a normally liquid hydroxy ether. "Lower" compounds are defined as containing not more than five carbon atoms. The filaments may be stretched preferably immediately on leaving the bath while still wet with the bath liquid; alternatively they may be stretched while in the bath or at a later stage while softened, e.g. at 290-310 DEG C. In an example a water-soluble methyl cellulose of methoxyl content 28.0 per cent and viscosity 15.3 centipoises (2 per cent aqueous solution at 20 DEG C.) is dissolved in 70 or 80 per cent (by volume) aqueous acetic acid to give a 20 per cent solution. After filtration and de-aeration it is extruded into a bath of acetone at room temperature. The filaments are stretched on leaving the bath by 50 per cent of their original length and wound as yarns. The yarns are substantially completely water-soluble and have a dry tenacity of about 1.25 g./denier or more.
