Abstract

In wet-spinning processes for the production of artificial silk, films, &c., from solutions of organic derivatives of cellulose, coagulation is effected in a coagulating medium containing relatively high concentrations of the lower aliphatic acid esters of di- or polyhydric alcohols, other than mono- or di-acetin, or their partial ethers (or also, according to the Provisional Specification, of the ethers of polyhydric alcohols, such as mono-ethyl and methyl-ethers of ethylene glycol). The di- or polyhydric alcohol derivations may be in part contained in the spinning solution. In a modification of the process, artificial silk, films, &c., obtained by wet-spinning processes, are treated immediately after setting with relatively high concentrations of these same derivatives. Suitable derivatives mentioned are glycol mono- and di-acetate, methyl glycol monoacetate, and other esters, particularly monocarboxylic esters, of glycol and its alkyl substitution products. For example, the coagulating bath may contain an aqueous solution of methyl or ethyl glycol monoacetate of 38-40 per cent concentration or glycol monoacetate of 45 per cent concentration. The spinning solution may contain any suitable solvent or latent solvent, or non-solvents such as mineral oils, olive oil, or castor oil. Other high boiling solvents, swelling agents, or plasticizers, p and also dispensed liquid or solid substances may be present in the solution. The coagulating medium may contain any suitable non-solvents or solvents, and also if desired, substances such as salts, sugars, and the like, capable of diminishing the solubility of any solvent present in the non-solvent coagulating agent.
