Abstract

Artificial filaments, ribbons, and other products having a basis of cellulose acetate or other organic derivative of cellulose are obtained by a wet spinning process in which the shaped materials are coagulated in a medium containing a solvent or plasticizer for the cellulose derivative, and the wet materials are stretched and then allowed to shrink under the action of the solvent or plasticizer. Preferably the coagulating medium contains a high concentration of solvent or plasticizer. Diacetone alcohol, glycol mono-acetate, methyl glycol mono-acetate, ethyl lactate, acetone, dioxane, methylene - ethylene ether, methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, methyl acetate, and ethyl acetate, are specified solvents. Cellulose derivatives of normal, low, or high viscosity characteristics may be used. Stretching and shrinking may take place in the coagulating bath or after emergence but under the action of coagulating medium carried by the filaments or other materials. The materials may subsequently be stretched or shrunk again, or saponified. In an example, cellulose acetate solution is extruded into aqueous glycol mono-acetate, and the coagulated filaments pass round a stretching roller and under a second roller dipping into a bath of water. They pass round a third roller rotating slower than the first roller so as to allow shrinkage, and then to a take-up device.
