Abstract

Artificial filaments, yarns, films, and the like are produced by extruding a solution of an organic derivative of cellulose in a volatile solvent into a liquid coagulating medium which contains a softening agent for the cellulose derivative having a boiling point above 100 DEG C. and which is maintained at a temperature approaching or above the boiling point of the volatile solvent. Suitable softening agents are those specified in Specification 340,325, e.g., tricresyl phosphate or diethyl phthalate, and glycol monoacetate, methyl glycol monoacetate, diacetone alcohol, ethyl lactate, and diacetin. The filaments, films and the like may be stretched during or continuously with their coagulation. In an example, an acetone solution of cellulose acetate is spun into an aqueous 30 per cent solution of glycol monoacetate at 55 DEG C. The products may be subjected to any after treatment, e.g. to treatment to improve extensibility or to produce effects as described in Specifications 380,504, 380,505, and 389,823, or to saponification as in Specifications 316,521, 318,468, [both in Class 2 (ii)], 402,104, 402,105, and 402,106. According to the Provisional Specification, the shaped spinning or film-forming solutions are coagulated in the presence of solvents for the cellulose derivatives, or the coagulated products are treated continuously with their production with baths containing solvents, the coagulating or after-treatment baths being maintained above normal room temperature.
