Abstract
Cellulose derivative filaments, threads, fabrics, films, and the like are impregnated by treatment in the swollen condition with a viscose solution. The swelling agents used may be such as have a precipitating action on the viscose, for example, alcohol or diluted acetic acid, or a regenerating action, such as concentrated hydrochloric acid. The viscose, which advantageously is of low concentration, for example, up to 2 or 4 per cent strength, may be applied by soaking, spraying, printing or the like. The viscose may contain additions such as glycerine, glycols, oleaginous or other softening agents, fillers, pigments, colours, or the like. The cellulose is regenerated by treatment of the materials with acids or acid salts. According to the amount of viscose applied, the materials have a raised safe ironing point, a decreased tendency to ladder, split, or slip, or an affinity for cotton colours. In an example, cellulose acetate threads are passed firstly through 75 per cent ethanol, then through a viscose containing 1,5 to 2 per cent of cellulose, and finally through a solution of sodium bisulphate. In another example, a cellulose acetate fabric is treated firstly with 40 per cent acetic acid and then with a solution of viscose containing 1 to 1,5 per cent of cellulose. The cellulose is regenerated by treatment of the fabric with benzene sulphonic acid. Specification 323,521, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to.
