Abstract

546,673. Artificial silk &c. BOLLINGTON PRINTING CO., Ltd., and HANNAY, R. J. Jan. 24,1941, No. 957. [Class 2 (ii)] Yarns or fabrics made of regenerated cellulose fibres are rendered resistant to shrinkage on subsequent washing or similar treatment, by subjecting them to treatment with a swelling or plasticizing agent of a concentration which will not have a detrimental effect on the materials, and maintaining them under set conditions of length or width during or subsequently to the application of the swelling agent and until the swelling agent has been removed. In an example, a viscose crepe fabric, which has been bleached and shrunk, is impregnated with a dilute solution of trimethyl benzyl ammonium hydroxide. It is exposed to the air for a short time and then stretched to the desired finished width or to a slightly greater width on a finishing stenter. It is dried under these stretched conditions, and then washed with very dilute acid, well rinsed, and re-dried. In another example, a viscose crepe fabric is impregnated with dilute caustic soda whilst held under tension to the desired finished width or to a slightly greater width and, whilst still under tension and without drying, the caustic soda is washed out of the fabric by means of water. The fabric is scoured, washed, and dried. Instead of the caustic soda solution there may be used a solution of di- or tri-methyl-benzyl-ammonium hydroxide.
