Abstract

Textile materials consisting of regenerated cellulose yarns in associated or unassociated form, produced by saponifying stretched artificial yarns having a basis of an organic ester of cellulose, are impregnated with a solution containing between 30 and 75 per cent by weight of a mercerising agent and having a shrinking action, and the solution is then removed from the materials. The treatment increases the tendency of the yarns or fabrics to shrink on drying from the wet state. It thus enables such fabrics to be used for covering wings, fuselage, and tail of aircraft. The extensibility of the yarns is improved by the treatment. The mercerizing agent may be caustic soda, caustic potash, or zinc chloride. Aqueous or alcoholic solutions may be used. The material may be treated by immersion, spraying, or padding. Yarns may be treated while loosely wound on bobbins or while passing through a series of treatment and washing baths. Removal of the mercerising agent may be effected by washing the materials with water. If a basic agent is used, the washing with water may be followed by treatment with dilute acid and then with water again. The materials are then dried. Fabrics may be applied over frameworks of aeroplane parts or lamp-shades or screens, while wet so that on drying they shrink and fit tightly and smoothly on the frames. They may subsequently be coated with cellulose acetate or nitrate or other dope. Specification 501,768 is referred to.
