Abstract

Textile materials such as those of cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose derivatives, or wool are rendered more water-repellent by treatment first with an alkylene oxide and then to the surface action of a quantity not exceeding the weight of the textile material of an organic esterifying agent containing an uninterrupted chain of at least ten carbon atoms in the molecule. Ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, epichlorhydrin, and butadiene dioxide are specified alkylene oxides. These may be used in aqueous or organic solvents, or in gaseous phase. There may be used one molecular proportion of alkylene oxide for two molecular proportions of cellulose, C6H10O5. The esterifying agent may be an anhydride or chloride of a higher fatty acid or an isocyanic acid ester containing an alkyl group of more than 10 carbon atoms. In an example, cotton calico is soaked in alcoholic caustic soda, squeezed, dried, and then treated with a solution of ethylene oxide in carbon tetrachloride. The solution is then removed by centrifuging, drying, washing, and again drying. The pretreated material is impregnated with a solution of stearyl isocyanate in benzine, centrifuged and dried. The material so treated is impermeable to water, and is still water-repellent after washing with soap. In another example, wool gaberdine is treated with ethylene oxide in carbon tetrachloride, and then with octadecyl isocyanate in carbon tetrachloride. The treated fabric is impermeable to water. Worsted fabric is treated with epichlorhydrin in cyclohexane, and then with stearic anhydride in carbon tetrachloride and paraffin. A fabric containing wool and viscose staple fibre is exposed to butadiene dioxide vapour and then treated with a solution in tetrachlorethane of dichloro sebol fatty acid chloride, obtained from a partially hydrogenized fish-oil fatty acid by chlorination and then formation of the acid chloride. Loose viscose staple fibres are impregnated with alcoholic caustic soda, centrifuged, dried, and then treated with gaseous propylene oxide. They are then passed through a solution of N-octodecyl-isatoic anhydride in carbon tetrachloride, centrifuged and dried.
