Abstract

Fibres, yarns, or fabrics of cotton or regenerated cellulose whose crease-resisting properties have been increased by insolubilizing a synthetic resin within the fibre are subjected to a preparatory treatment adapted to ensure penetration by a swelling agent, followed by a swelling or shrinking treatment. The preparatory treatment may comprise treatment with a soap or other suitable washing solution, preferably together with a wetting agent. In an example, a mercerized cotton fabric is impregnated with a urea formaldehyde condensate, dried at low temperature, and heated for 2--3 minutes at 170 DEG C. It is then washed with very dilute alkali containing a wetting agent, squeezed and passed through caustic soda solution of mercerizing strength without tension, washed and finished with a 1--2 per cent shrinkage in warp and weft. In a further example, a condensation product of cresol and formaldehyde is employed. Specifications 291,473, 291,474, and 304,900, [all in Class 42 (i)], are referred to.
